Starting June 21, 2011, FPL will offer a cash solar energy rebate to their Fort Myers and Naples area customers who install solar water heating or photovoltaic (PV) systems in their homes and businesses. The rebates are part of a five-year pilot program approved by the Florida Public Service Commission. This program will promote clean solar power and reduce energy consumption. Funding is limited and will be offered on a first-come-first-served basis. So don't delay!
The rebate offers $1,000 for the installation of a new solar hot water system on an existing home with a gas or electric water heating system. The FPL solar energy rebate includes the solar thermal collectors, pumps, mounts and water tanks.
For residential solar energy systems, FPL will pay $2 per watt of DC output, up to $20,000 in solar energy rebates. This solar rebate is available only to existing residential customers and must be applied to an existing home. The Photovoltaic (PV) rebate is for solar panels, mounting hardware, grid-interactive electric inverter(s), optional battery systems, associated cabling, and disconnect devices if required.
The rebate amount is based on the size of the installed system: $30 per 1,000 BTUh/day of the maximum rated output of the system and up to $50,000 per premise during this program. Businesses with multiple locations can apply for rebates up to $150,000 per year. The rebate is available to existing FPL customers with electric or gas water heating and applicants must be a current account holder at the location where the system is installed.
The rebate amount varies depending on the DC rating of the solar panels:
For example, a 28 kW system would receive $2 per watt for the first 10 kW, $1.50 per watt for the next 15 kW and $1 per watt for the remaining 3 kW, totaling a rebate of $45,500.Customers can receive one rebate of up to $50,000 per premise during the life of the program. Customers with multiple locations can apply for rebates for multiple locations up to a limit of $150,000 per funding year.

The Federal Government offers an enormous solar tax incentive: 30% of the cost, up to $500 per .5 kW of power capacity, on solar energy systems including solar electric systems (Photovoltaic panels) and solar hot water systems. Both existing and new construction homes qualify for the solar energy systems tax credit. To qualify, the home must be a primary residence and cannot be a rental or secondary home.
