There is something magical about making electricity from the sun’s rays. Photovoltaic solar, that which generates electricity, is becoming more popular by the day.
Solar Electric (or PV) systems convert sunlight to electricity. Most systems are “grid tied” which means the system is tied into the utility company and in the event you produce more energy than you consume the power company will purchase the power. The PV modules generate DC electricity and send it to the inverter which transforms DC power into AC electricity that we can use. There are stand alone solar electric systems that have batteries to store energy for off the grid applications.
The Federal Government offers a 30% tax credit for homeowners and businesses that install a solar electric system and the Florida Renewable Technologies and Energy Efficiency Act will pay $4.00 a watt. The state incentives have a cap of $20,000 for homeowners and $100,000 for businesses.
Our 21,000 square foot corporate headquarters in Fort Myers, Florida is one of the largest facilities dedicated to energy efficiency and conservation in the nation. We have a 12.6 KW grid tied solar electric system that provides electricity for our offices. We are a carbon neutral facility, meaning we produce enough electricity to offset our consumption. In the event we produce more electricity than we are using, the meter runs backwards and the utility company buys the power from us. Solar energy also provides the electricity to light the building’s sign.
